A nest in the knot,
perfectly rounded and shaped,
birds fledged and flying.

Sized for hummingbirds,
lined with fur and milkweed silks
and afternoon sun.

Nest out of the tree,
my guess, made by goldfinches,
I’ve seen them sing here.

Perfect beak-built nest,
survivor of ice and snow,
glows in late March sun.

This humble round nest,
past and maybe future home,
to be salvaged, loved.
