Haiku-a-day
A tree trunk and three large rocks at the edge of a river in November.

The air’s been let out,
hardly any birdsong heard,
the bare bones of earth show.

Haiku-a-day
Faint sun coming out behind clouds to briefly reflect in a river in November.

November sun breaks
weakly on the cold river —
everything changes.

Haiku-a-day
A deer with antlers in November on a forested riverbank.

Antlers kept above,
he swam across the river
and disappeared fast.

Haiku-a-day
Canadian geese preen on a riverbank as the sun sets.

Unbothered by us,
geese congregate riverside,
preening with shadows.

Haiku-a-day

Clouds like a Sunday
pull over us as we walk,
criss-crossed in the sky.

Haiku-a-day
A large cloud bank against a blue sky over a river in autumn.

We’re swallowed by it —
the clouds making a bright sheen
on the wide river.

Haiku-a-day
A sandhill crane feeding on acorns in grass near a forest edge.

Body smooth as stone,
neck like a flying kite tail —
sandhill crane in fall.

Haiku-a-day
Two shadows on a bridge cast on a river with Canadian Geese floating.

At the bridge’s edge
we’re thrown into the river
by long warm shadows.

Haiku-a-day
Three deer feed on a river bank among trees changing color in October.

Peace at the river,
deer feed on the other side,
birdsong in all ears.

Haiku-a-day
Sunlight on the current of a shallow river.

It reaches for me —
late sunlight on the river,
not too late for me.

Haiku-a-day
A white-tailed deer eating acorns in a thicket, looking at the camera.

She’s crunching acorns
every night at the river,
evening birds sing.

Haiku-a-day
A collection of small black acorns and caps from a red oak tree.

Acorns like jewels,
smooth talismans in my hand,
crunch under our feet.

Haiku-a-day
A cloud against blue sky and a tree changing color in autumn reflected in a shallow river.

Clouds in the river,
all of our words disappear
and go to nothing.

Haiku-a-day
Sun setting over a river on a summer evening.

Crickets sing all day
in this drifting August time,
before and after.

Haiku-a-day
Underwater grasses in a river seen from above on a summer evening.

I can’t let it go,
my want of something precious,
something beloved.

Haiku-a-day
The Huron River with sun on it on a summer evening.

Alone, I’m walking,
as the river current goes,
and things fall apart.

Haiku-a-day
A strip of clouds, blue sky, and the other side of a riverbank refelected in a river on a sunny June day.

We walk with worries,
the clouds meet in the river
to see themselves clear.

Haiku-a-day
A handsome black and white dog stretched out on a riverbank looking at the view.

And what’s my purpose,
bright sky over the river,
clouds lift all day long.

Haiku-a-day
A view of a river in early evening light in spring.

Evening spreads out
into every crevice
of the spring river.
